Abstract
The present study aims to assess the sustainability of tourism development in the tourist villages of East Azerbaijan province, Iran. The required data are collected using a library study and a field study (using a questionnaire). In this study, a barometer of sustainability, and a radar (amoeba) chart are used to evaluate how much sustainable tourism development in the tourist villages of East Azerbaijan province. To assess the sustainability of rural tourism in the studied villages, 95 indicators appropriate to the structure of the villages studied and compatible with the rural environment, are obtained (41 indicators for assessing social sustainability, 25 indicators for economic sustainability, 29 indicators for environmental sustainability. In this study, analysis is performed at the village level and the unit of analysis is rural household heads. The statistical population includes the household heads in the four tourist villages of East Azerbaijan, Iran (N = 819). The sample size is estimated to be 265 for the household heads according to the Krejcie and Morgan Table. The sample household heads are selected using stratified sampling. The results show that the socio-cultural and economic dimensions are more sustainable than the environmental dimension and also the tourist villages of East Azerbaijan province have relatively moderate sustainability. Therefore, to enhance the sustainability of tourism development in the studied villages, in addition to applying the principles and requirements of sustainable tourism development in policies and action plans, it is required to consider the interests and needs of stakeholders from various aspects to balance the three pillars of sustainable development in East Azerbaijan province.
