Identification of Key Factors Influencing the Role of Sport in the Sustainable Development of Shiraz City

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to identify the key factors influencing the role of sport in the sustainable development of Shiraz city. The research method was applied in nature and qualitative in type, using thematic analysis. The statistical population consisted of sports management professors, urban planning experts, managers of sports venues, and Ph.D. students in sports management and environmental studies. The sample was selected using purposive and snowball sampling techniques. Data collection was conducted through semi-structured interviews with 18 experts until theoretical saturation was achieved. The validity of the study was confirmed by subject matter experts, and its reliability was assessed using the intra-subject agreement method, yielding an agreement rate of 83 percent. The findings revealed that 67 key points, 16 concepts, and 6 main themes were identified as key factors affecting the role of sport in Shiraz's sustainable urban development. These main themes include: enhancement of urban infrastructure and services, sustainable urban development standards, urban management and planning, urban destination management, urban brand management, and sustainable urban development. These themes indicate that sport is not merely a recreational or physical activity, but a strategic tool for improving quality of life, strengthening urban identity, enhancing infrastructure, attracting investment, fostering social interactions, and promoting environmental protection. Therefore, emphasizing the role of sport in urban development policies can not only improve sustainability indicators in Shiraz but also support the realization of balanced, participatory, and long-term sustainable development. Integrating sports-related goals and programs into urban management and executive structures is thus an essential necessity on the path toward achieving a sustainable, healthy, and dynamic city.
