Abstract
From an environmental perspective, the most common reason for developing sustainable public transportation systems is to reduce car use and traffic congestion, which in turn leads to improved environmental quality. This research aims to investigate the role of public transportation in reducing urban problems (traffic-air pollution) with emphasis on the city of Ahvaz. The present research is an applied study based on a descriptive-analytical method. Two stages were used to collect and analyze information. The collection was conducted using reliable library studies and documents and a researcher-made questionnaire. The AHP model was used to analyze the data, and in this regard, the research questionnaires were distributed among 25 experts in the urban and municipal traffic fields. According to the results obtained from AHP, the importance of the indicators (criteria), in order of their percentage importance, are: (safety 0.499), (environmental pollution 0.313), (affordability 0.120), and (comfort 0.068). Finally, the most preferable option among the two motorized transportation models is (public transportation model 0.778) compared to (personal transportation model 0.222).
