Abstract
The rapid expansion of cities is one of the most important spatial phenomena in the world, which has caused numerous concerns by creating destructive environmental consequences and inappropriate spatial changes, especially around large cities. In the meantime, paying attention to the impact of urban sprawl and changes in the rural landscape has led to numerous researches. So far, there has not been a comprehensive study that investigates the scientometrics of this field. In order to fill this gap, reviewing the related articles and using the scientometric methodology of this research was done in three steps: setting, monitoring and analyzing the data set. In the first step, the articles published on the subject were collected from the Scopus database in the years 1979 to 2024, and then in the second step, monitoring documents and 329 articles were selected based on the literature review of this field. Finally, VOSviewer software was used to analyze the citations of previous researches, the authorship and the occurrence of key words. Co-occurrence analysis of words shows that the main focus of researches is on investigating the consequences of the physical expansion of cities and changes in the surrounding landscape. The accumulation of researches related to the subject under study revealed the key words and numerous topics of this field in the center and core of the map. Core keywords include urban sprawl, urbanization, urban growth, peripheral areas, landscape structure, landscape planning, land use change, and landscape change. Of course, the emergence of new research fields such as spatial planning, landscape structure, land use planning, ecosystem and human services provide new opportunities for future research in this field. and it helps policymakers and urban planners develop effective policies and programs to manage urban sprawl and reduce its negative consequences.
