Abstract
The tourism industry in Iran, particularly in the area of geotourism, faces numerous challenges in rural regions that hinder the realization of its developmental goals. Haris County, located in East Azerbaijan Province, has rich geographical and natural potential; however, it currently experiences a disconnect between its capabilities and actual conditions. This lack of attention to existing challenges is considered one of the primary factors contributing to the failure of geotourism development in rural communities.
This study employs a descriptive-analytical approach with applied objectives, utilizing the GAM geosite assessment method and the Comensco framework. The evaluation results indicate that the geosites of Mount Saplaq, the Nahand Dam, the salt domes north of Tabriz, and the Shush Qom Desert possess significant scientific, educational, and aesthetic values. Mount Saplaq has achieved a higher score compared to other geosites due to its tourism facilities and natural attractions. Additionally, Comensco evaluations reveal that Mount Saplaq and Shiran Waterfall received the highest and lowest scores, respectively.
The findings suggest that Herris County, with its abundant natural and human resources, requires structured planning and attention to existing challenges for the development of tourism, particularly geotourism. To effectively harness the tourism potential of this region, substantial actions must be undertaken. Enhancing infrastructure, implementing effective management strategies, and conducting appropriate marketing can facilitate the achievement of developmental objectives and position Haris County as a primary tourism destination within the province.
