Abstract

This research performed for assessment of erosion condition of the Tajyar catchment located in NW of Iran with regard to the importance of soil erosion, especially in mountainous catchments. In this way, it was tried to estimate erosion and sediment yield rates using EPM and MPSIAC models based on ability of geographic information system (GIS). Data used involved maps, satellite photos, statistic of weather and water gage stations. Results indicated that it was considerable differences between the models with point of estimated erosion and sediment yield, so that estimated total sediment yield is equal to 99342/76 ton per year in MPSIAC model and 16089/37 ton per year in EPM model, it showed that studied catchment is placed in medium erosion class using MPSIAC model and in low erosion class using EPM model. Finally, it concluded that MPSIAC model has better efficiency than EPM model because involving more factors, joining influence of factors in hand and more accuracy of pointing tables and related equations in other hand. However calibration of MPSIAC model in order reduction of errors and more accurate prediction can give more good and trusty results
