Environmental assessment is increasingly being incorporated into urban development plans, and its implementation for urban projects is one of the methods for evaluating the extent to which sustainable development goals are achieved. The aim of this paper is to assess the importance of environmental strategies in urban development plans for Districts 1 and 2 of Baghdad. A descriptive-analytical and quantitative approach was used. To describe the theoretical foundations and determine the indicators, documentary and library methods were used. Questionnaires and interviews with urban planning experts were used to assess the indicators and collect data. The indicators derived from the theoretical studies of the research were based on two areas: environment and physical form. It was determined that among the sub-criteria related to the environmental criterion, reducing air pollution with a weight of 0.79, proper waste and wastewater disposal with a weight of 0.76, improving the quality and quantity of water resources with a weight of 0.18, reviving lost green spaces or pastures with a weight of 0.082, soil quality and fertility with a weight of 0.033, respectively, had the highest to lowest importance. Among the sub-criteria related to the physical criterion, achieving optimal density with a weight of 0.33, achieving a healthy city program with a weight of 0.25, improving the quality of settlements with a weight of 0.18, optimal distribution of land uses in the city with a weight of 0.082, increasing access to open and green spaces with a weight of 0.079, and attention to indigenous architecture and urban planning with a weight of 0.076 had the highest to lowest importance, respectively. Therefore, it is recommended that in designing development strategies for Baghdad, reducing air pollution and proper waste disposal, the health of water resources, population density, and improving the quality of settlements should be prioritized.
