Background and Objective:

Although historic urban fabrics have often been identified as problematic areas, they also represent some of the most significant potentials within a city. In recent years, growing attention has been directed toward improving the environmental quality and revitalization of these historic areas. Among various approaches, tactical urbanism has emerged as a key strategy, employing short-term, low-cost interventions to bring about noticeable improvements. The aim of this study is to introduce an effective approach for revitalizing the historic fabric of Urmia, focusing on tactical interventions that can catalyze broader transformations.

Research Method:

This study is applied-developmental in nature and follows a problem-oriented methodology based on documentary and library research. The research adopts a qualitative approach, utilizing exploratory content analysis to address the research questions. The statistical population consists of a wide range of academic documents related to the concepts of tactical urbanism, historic urban fabrics, and the techniques associated with this planning method. Data has been collected from books, scholarly articles, theses (both domestic and international), urban development plans, and credible online sources.

Findings:

The findings of the study indicate that the historic fabric of Urmia is faced with numerous challenges, including issues related to market entrances, Ataei Street, urban transport terminals, and more. These areas require targeted interventions to address existing problems.

Conclusion:

Tactical urbanism, by offering effective and short-term solutions, can significantly contribute to the organization and enhancement of historic urban environments in Urmia. This approach has the potential to restore vitality and liveliness to the city's old neighborhoods. Therefore, tactical urbanism can be considered one of the most suitable strategies for addressing the challenges of Urmia’s historic core.
